I worked on Saiyuki for, like, 6 years and this is still the happiest it’s ever made me.

Nice, but they’re still white, conventionally attractive, not visually trans* or disabled, neither of them have visable scarring, stretchmarks, etc, I mean, even on a basic body-positive note, neither of them have hair legs or armpits.
I’ve yet to see ONE graphic along these lines that actually include anything other than the chubby/skinny thing. Let’s see some fat, scarred and stretchmarked black trans women with prosthetic limbs or dwarfism or something, and hairy legs, maybe she’s got a shaped afro or something, natural black hair is looked down on by society.
Then I’ll get as excited as the rest of tumblr by these nicely drawn graphics.
YOU PEOPLE ARE NEVER HAPPY A RE YOU
IS THIS FUCKING BETTER??!?@»@?
Is this sarcastic? Because I genuinely love that bottom one. CLAW HANDS AND TWO FEET TALL AND READY FOR A FULL LIFE.
And guys, it’s true - there’s a lot of negativity out there, but when you see someone try to “break through it” and teach people to love themselves, it’s disturbing how often they only reach out to a tiny subsection of the marginalized. Top pic is great, but it’s even better as a piece AND as a moment to expand our minds and see who ISN’T pictured.
throws on the bed!!
Ah ha ha! Japanese SFX: the bane of all English-language manga translators/editors…
For a language with such a large vocabulary, we severely lack easily recognizable ways to represent the sound of stuff like “throws on the bed.” ^_^ Or, my personal favorite, the sound a subway car makes as it clatters along the tracks.
K-KLAK K-KLAK KTAK KTAK etc. <——I deal with these subway car sfx all the time in my adventures lettering for Viz. I have yet to work a “THROWS ON THE BED” into a panel, though. This is up there with my other favorite SFX, “STUFF”, “BURY”, and “INSERT”.
K-KLAK is a good one. There’s a resonance that “ka-tan ka-tan” has that it doesn’t quite capture, but it’s probably the best you can do.
Yeah, freelancing for VIZ has forced me to think a lot harder about this than I ever had to at TP. Plus I was working with a newbie translator on a book for J-Manga recently, and he left a LOT of the SFX choices up to me. Not a big problem, and I actually had fun coming up for different sounds that tennis balls make when you smack them different ways, but he left me some hilarious notes in the script where he was like, “I have no idea what this sound is even supposed to represent, let alone what it should be in English.” :-)
Ditto! As a former TP rewriter, moving to Seven Seas (where they rewrite sound effects) has pulled my brain in crazy new directions. We once needed the sound of a fat man trying to walk through a thin alley.
But my default sound effect for any small shift, rustle, blow, etc. is “shhf” or “fssh.” Seriously, you can use those for so many things, including that SU- sound they always use in manga when someone is lifting a hand.
Didn’t we once use the sound effect “Lots of blue sky!” at TP for Hands Off, though? Exclamation point and everything.
P.S.—In my opinion, throws on the bed = “WHUMPH.” “WHUMP” for something heavy being dropped, “PH” softens the end because of hitting pillows. It’s ugly-looking and doesn’t quite capture the first lift, but I think it gets the job done. Maybe “LIFT WHUMPH.” Oh God, so ugly.

does this mean Margaret Atwood reads homestuck
oh my god
I’m not even a Homestuck and this is awesome.
What if Margaret Atwood has a fandom tumblr…
Margaret Atwood at SDCC in general is pretty friggin’ amazing. Now I’m kind of kicking myself for not going this year.
Margaret Atwood lives down the street from me and is constantly being awesome and all up in new media. She also laid the metaphorical smackdown on Toronto’s horrible mayor. She is great, this is great, everything is great.
For those who maybe wonder how I’m doing, to be honest, not so good. Since about 3 days ago (not quite sure, might have been 4 by now) I have had this really weird ache in my back, and it’s gotten worse. Now not only my back, but also my neck and shoulders hurt, to a point where even standing…
Oh no! Feel better! And you should see a doctor…you’re so young to have pain like that.
I love Lady Phantomhive’s Doujinshi Fridays.
*Note: That link is extremely not safe for work, whoa nelly.
A few months ago a friend of mine asked me if I consider myself a feminist, and responded with uncomprehending outrage when I said that I did not. There were a lot of us in that conversation, so it was hard for me to explain my position in the ensuing crossfire. My friend was concerned that we…
Great article, totally hear you. But if you might consider it, please, for the sake of the movement, I think it would be really helpful if you used the term “feminist ally” when someone asks if you’re a feminist. I mention it because you did, and it seems to be what you mean, although I don’t mean to downplay your respectful handling of the intersection of oppression (I would consider you a feminist, but obviously that’s not what makes you comfortable). “Feminist” has become such a dirty word that for visibility, for solidarity, it really, genuinely hurts me when someone who’s a feminist says they’re not a feminist. We really need to reclaim the term as a positive thing, since too many people think feminists are shrieking harpies who just like to complain when HEY GUYS, THINGS ARE TOTALLY EQUAL, WOMEN WORK AND STUFF NOW AND THERE ARE SOME LADIES IN GOVERNMENT. We need all hands on deck to fight that stereotype because it’s terrifyingly prevalent in a lot of circles. Feminist ally is a great term. I recommend it to anyone who has solidarity with feminism but doesn’t feel particular ownership or expertise.
At last some more clear photos with Yahiko!
